The COVID-19 outbreak and countrywide lockdowns have had a direct impact on everyone, and as we have spent the past year stuck inside, certain crimes have prevailed more than others as cybercrimes skyrocket over the past 12 months.
As the world was forced to become more cyber-based than ever before, the UK has seen a 31% increase in cybercrimes during the pandemic.
Throughout the pandemic, cybersecurity company Nexor revealed an estimated 3,445 businesses fell victim to cyber scams from September 2019 to September 2020, with 1,740 of those cases being reported as the country was forced into lockdown, costing businesses a collective £6.2 million in cyber scams.
A frequent method of attack used by criminals was emails, creating convincing emails to target key individuals that have been designed to get the public to click harmful links.
Paul Chicester, director of operations at Britain’s National Cyber Security Centre warned the British public by saying…
“Nation-state actors are using Covid as a theme, sending what appear to be news articles from popular media outlets in an attempt to encourage targets to click on what are dangerous links.”
Cyber-attacks are on the rise as we saw a reported 13% of businesses reporting cyberattacks in 2015, yet we have seen that number rise quickly to 25% within just a matter of years.
When asked, one in eight businesses say that the risk of cyber-attacks is deterring them from adopting digital technologies.
As technology becomes more and more used in everyone’s day to day life, attacks look to keep rising as more businesses become targets for criminals.
